how to clean a screen protector

How to Re-apply a screen protector (and remove dust from the sticky side) Oct 2, 2015

  1. Nickexp , Oct 2, 2015 :
Why I made this tutorial: Ok- so basically I had this annoying bubble on my tempered glass screen protector. It had in the centre of it what looks like a little chip from the glass, which I later found out after removing the screen protector was dust. Then- to clean it I used the micro-fibre cloth. Big mistake. All of the bits of dust on it just got stuck to the sticky side of the screen protector, so I'll just walk people though how to do it right and clean dust off without, well, adding more- because when I reapplied it the first time it was even worse.

Disclaimer: This tutorial was written based off of my experience with a Tempered Glass screen protector- not sure how well it works with a normal one, if anyone tries it with a normal plastic one please let me know how it goes, but it should work the same.
    Tutorial:
    1.
So first you'll want to remove your screen protector- the more dust free the area, the better. I'd recommend turning off any fans and doing it at a clean workspace/desk/whatever. (If for some reason you're screen protector is dust free after removal- skip to step 6)

    2. At this point you'll need sticky tape (any type will work- I heard you need to use packing tape but normal office tape worked fine, if not better, for me and is more readily available).

    3. Now sticky tape the non-sticky side down so that when removing the strips of tape one by one from the other side, it won't lift off of the table/workspace and you won't have to use your hands to hold it down, getting it dirty and defeating the whole point of doing this in the first place.

    4. Now place a strip of sticky tape across the sticky side of the screen protector, make sure it's actually stuck t the screen protector, then peel it off. Make sure that you do this over and over, until you have gotten the whole of that side. This will safely remove all dust, fingerprints and other things from the sticky side of the screen (and the non-sticky side, but the normal side the micro-fibre cloth is easier to use on that side as it has no stickiness to grab the small bits of it that can come off).

    5. Once you've done this across the whole of the side, check for any remaining dust, if there is any, just reapply tape there and peel it off.

    6. Make sure you're devices screen is clean, specifically of dust and small particles that will cause air bubbles- and fingerprints and smudges that will just be annoying. Also you can remove the tape from the non-sticky side of the screen protector that was holding it down, as it is no longer needed.

    7. Now you can reapply the screen protector, if it isn't sticky enough to stick- there are multiple ways around this. I didn't run into it as the sticky tape actually added stickiness (you may want to try that if you skipped to step 6), but apparently in a room full of steam you can do a "dry install", but the steam method doesn't sound as good, and I feel like it would probably fog up the screen protector a bit, plus I don't feel like putting my phone in a steamy room, so only do this if the other method doesn't work.

    8. Now use the tool that OnePlus provided (or if you don't have that, a ruler may work but your hands is fine) to push air bubbles off to the side and out, if one won't go and it looks like there is like a chip in the screen protector, that is probably dust, so restart if you want to get rid of it and pushing it off won't work.

Enjoy your now-clean screen protectors without any bubbles! I hope this guide helped, if you need help or I wasn't clear enough please post below and I will get back to you ASAP.

What happened? You don't need any special tape or anything- just normal office tape is what I used. It should be able to be peeled off (make you you have some hanging off to grab it by). I just did it 1 strip at a time and it worked fine.

EDIT: Also- this tutorial was based off of my experience with the tempered glass screen protector- forgot to mention that, added it to the thread and made some aesthetic changes that will hopefully make it easier to read.

I heard people was just washing them with soap :D

You do not want any glue on your sticky or unsticky side... it reduces visibility and might reduce the touch capability...

So easier is to buy a new one... it cost not that much... a tempered glass can be found ~$5...

Best answer so far... Re-applying won't work in the long term. C'mon, not that expensive! :)

Thanks- I was hoping it might be helpful to someone- since I found one vauge mention of how you can use sticky tap one some ancient website and decided to actually make a tutorial- it's my first one so sorry if it's a little vague.

That's you you use sticky tape- the glass looked just as clean as when I got it. As long as the sticky tape isn't filthy it's all good, and the screen protector is just as sticky as it is out of the box. Plus why buy a new one just because you have a few air bubbles? This is just an alternative to them- obviously if the screen protector is damaged you need a new one.

  14. Nickexp , Oct 2, 2015 :
You saying my tutorial works or advising people to get an expert? I'm confused. lol

  15. pgidia , Oct 2, 2015 :
To take help from expert rather than trying on own ;)

  16. Nickexp , Oct 2, 2015 :
Yeah- but it is expensive for where I live, plus why bother? Just to get rid of some air bubbles? Not worth it- it's just so easy to do this, it took me like 10 minutes (I was working out how to do it as I went) and it worked fine, the screen protector is better placed and just as (if not more) sticky than before, so no harm done.

Don't have one- but invite begging on threads that have nothing to do with invites won't get you one, just saying.
